The cars passed the old lady. Her walking stick posed in front of her. One had raised to press the button. She smiled. She was on her way to her granddaughter’s birthday party. There were only a few cars nearby.

A minute later the pedestrian light turned green. She began to walk.
First foot forward.
Second foot forward.
Cane.
First foot forward.
Second foot forward.
Cane.
Stop for a rest.
Repeat.

By now there were dozens of car lining up behind the traffic lights.

First foot forward.
Second foot forward.
Cane.
Stop for a rest.
Repeat.

The lady began to frown. She should feel a sharp pain in her left hip. It was flaring up despite months of treatment.
Cars began to honk. The light for pedestrians began to flash.
She was only half way there. Her daughter’s house was only a block away!
Sirens began to blare from the street on the right. It was the police!
The police pulled up onto the sidewalk.

One man came forward (much quicker) and waved at the old lady. He smiled at her.
“Ms. Please follow me.”
“Why hello there officer!” She replied in confusion.
She watched as the light turned red. The cars still honking.
“I can offer you a ride. Don’t think you’ll get to cross the rest of the street.”
The old lady sighed.

“Why thank you!” She said, beginning to follow the police officer to the car. The officer laughed and then picked her up and lightly jogged to the car. A hundred drivers sighed in relief.
The traffic began to ease. The old lady got a lift to her daughter’s house.
“Thank you!” She said to the officer.
“No worries. What was your name?” The officer asked.
The old lady laughed.
“Gertrude.” She said, knocking on the door.
The officer snorted and went back to the car.
When the door finally opened, Gertrude hugged her daughter Olivia.
Gertrude was led to the table. Her granddaughter Abigail was in the middle of opening presents.
“Now am I here in time for cake?” Gertrude asked.
